To record the Forum lecturer I set up a corded SM58 mic in the Chapel.
I removed the mixer/amp from the Yamaha portable audio system and set it on the window well.
The mic is connected to Input 1 of the mixer.
The record output of the mixer is connected to the silver Zoom digital recorder input.
Here's how to perform the recording:
- Turn on the silver Zoom recorder
- Turn on the Yamaha mixer/amp
- Ask the speaker to speak into the microphone when giving his/her presentation
- On the Zoom press the red dot button once to enter "record ready" mode, and then again to initiate recording.
Press the red dot button twice!! During recording you will see the signal meters and the timer counting.
- To end the recording, press the red dot button again.
- Turn off Zoom and mixer.
I will get the SD card from the Zoom and transfer the recording.
Notes
- The recording output of the Yamaha mixer only requires the channel 1 gain knob to be elevated.
The recording output is not dependent on the Main speaker fader.
Thus: the recording can be accomplished with NO amplification through the speakers, if desired.
I suggest that the speakers be used partly for the Forum attendees and partly so that the speaker can hear themself
and will continue to stay close to the mic.
- You can move the mic and increase the gain knobs on the mixer, but eventually feedback will occur.
- Both Zoom recorders occasionally have issues with recognizing the installed SD card.
The black Zoom in the sanctuary only displays the error message briefly at startup. Without recognizing the card, the unit will record one minute of audio (to internal storage) and then stop. To fix this, cycle power on the unit. If that doesn't work, reinstall the SD card.
The silver Zoom will indicate "No Card". To fix this, re-seat the SD card while the unit is powered off.

Having moved the LAV5 wireless receiver to the Chapel, here are some instructions.
- The Sennheiser unit is connected to input 2 of the Yamaha mixer
- I set the gain to 9:00 to avoid feedback from the main speakers
- Now, both the corded SM58 mic and LAV5 will be routed to the Zoom for recording
- The Sennheiser receiver is turned on and off by pressing the power button on front
- The bodypack transmitter is turned on and off by opening the panel on its front, and holding down the power button for about 4 seconds.
- If "RF Mute?" appears on the display... continue to hold down the switch to power off. We don't want to modify the RF Mute settings.
- The batteries in the transmitter need to be checked via its display. Fresh rechargeable batteries are available in the sanctuary sound desk.
- The bodypack currently has the lavalier mic that shipped with it. We can investigate a headset when they are available.
